The Weakest Link

Testing With A Bang

It’s been a busy week for the design and project engineering teams at Ardmore Craig with a series of destructive tests undertaken on several “weak link” designs developed for use with a subsea plough.

Separate designs, one of which required the breaking load to be set and one specified for the onset of yield were developed and non-linear analysis runs undertaken by our design team to predict the deformations and failure points of the links.

Following this our project engineers were on site to support fabrication & machining work and witness testing to validate the approach and verify the material specification data for the steel used in the test pieces.

With loads of up to 300 tonnes, these test pieces went with a bang!
